At first, none of the 141 people in Cave Chibichiri came out.
Japanese people were taught to die with honor.
They believed Americans were 'devils.'
The people tried to fight the soldiers but in vain.
In the cave there were two old men who had once fought in China as soldiers.
They knew about the Nanking massacre and they thought this time would be their turn.
They said, "Let's commit suicide."
They set a fire to die by gas and smoke.
Mothers killed their children and then committed suicide.
The cave was like hell.
Some of the people wanted to die instantly, so they finally came out of the cave.
They thought they would be shot.
However, those people were not killed but saved.
Unfortunately 86 people lost their precious lives.
People in Cave Shimuku also prepared to fight. But, the same tragedy didn't occur.
Why not? Because there were two old men who had lived in Hawaii as immigrants.
When people talked about ,group suicide,' they went out of the cave to talk to the US soldiers.
As a result, all of these people survived.
