Perl コーディング初心者質問コーナーより誘導されてきました。

sub/test.htmから＜n月＞という文字列がある行をマッチさせたいのですが、下のようにすると
ローカルではマッチするんですが、サーバーに上げるとマッチしなくなります。

print "content-type: text/html\n\n<html>";
open(TEST, "sub/test.htm");
while (<TEST>) {
if ($_ =~ /＜.*?月＞/) {print $_;}
}
close(TEST);
print "</html>";
exit;

4行目を
if ($_ =~ /＜(.*?)月＞/) {print $_;}
に書き換えるとローカルでもサーバー上でもマッチします。なぜでしょうか。
