＞フェルマが「problem-solverじゃない」とはどういう意味？

マホーニィはあくまでフェルマは「problem-solver」だと信じていたら
しい。でも，ヴェイユはそういうフェルマ観が気に入らなかった。そも
そもマホーニィ自身が同じ本の中で「Fermat's concern for general
method as well as for solving particular problems.」（初版本
p.76）と書いており、ヴェイユはこうしたことからマホーニィのいう
「problem-solver」の意味が不明だとも書いている。さらに、ヴェイユ
は「And Fermat was no more and no less of a problem-solver
than any great mathematician in history. As Hilbert said, it
is by solving problems that mathematics keeps alive.」と書いて
いる。ヴェイユは非常に本格的にフェルマを研究しており、フェルマを
「problem-solver」だとしか見れない「数学的センスのない」マホー
ニィを攻撃したということらしい。まぁ、ヴェイユは、フェルマは単な
る（悪い意味での）「problem-solver」なんかではないと強く主張した
かったということだろう。ディオファントスの仕事を再考したフェルマ
の仕事の中に楕円曲線論の萌芽を読み取っていたヴェイユならではの見
解ということかもしれないが。。。
