Two hints before anyone asks about why there are 40 boxes:
1) Be careful with the wording, especially towards the end
2) Think of a simpler problem: If you have two boxes, and each of
those boxes has two boxes in them, how many boxes do you have?
(Metahint: It's not four)

Well, this Mr. Rodgers (with a 'd') still gets 88,
and would like to know why this answer is neither
wrong nor trivially obvious! Surely each of the 4
boxes (in each of the 3 boxes) comprises 7 boxes
altogether, therefore each of the 3 boxes comprises
4x7 + 1 = 29 boxes altogether, therefore there are
3x29 + 1 = 88 boxes altogether? I don't even see
what the problem is - so go on, enlighten me!

Note that, not counting the big box, there are only three boxes right
now.

NGNGSince there are only three boxees to contend with, this is
straightforward - there are 12 smaller boxes.

This is where the trick is. The wording is, "in each of the above four
boxes...", the six small boxes are spread among the four boxes, and
since there are four such groups, 6 * 4 = 24.
So now we have 24 boxes, plus the 12 smaller boxes in which these 24
are contained, plus the 3 boxes in which those 12 are contained, plus
the 1 big box.
Hence, 40 boxes.
Of course, the problem with this "puzzle" is that you can kind of
choose your interpretation of that tricky sentence. In this case, I
know this is what the quizzer had in mind simply because another user
answered "40" and was told the number was correct. This is the only
interpretation of the puzzle that would make 40 correct.

NGNGof the phrase "each of the above four boxes". It'd never stand up
in a court of law - except in Wonderland, maybe. The use of the
definite article implies that "the" four boxes in question must be
*all* of the four inside one of the three larger boxes; and nothing
in the wording of the problem even faintly suggests that any one of
the three boxes is to be singled out from the others; so the count
must include *all* four boxes in *each* of the three bigger boxes.
There just isn't any latitude for another interpretation.
