I didn't bother to read previous responses,
but the more contact you have with the violin the better.
In the Galamian school this is called double contact.
Therefore, when in third position, touch the side of the instrument with the palm,
just like Itzhak Perlman does.
This is a reason to use a wrist generated vibrato rather than arm when in this position.
Ricci uses the same technique. You can see it in his new book.
