Bruno Walter conducts Gustav Mahler: Symphonies Nos 1 & 2 (NYP, 1942)
Reviewer: Kotaro Yamasaki (Critic)
Previously unreleased materials is newly issued on M&A to commemorate 50th anniversary
year of Bruno Walter's death. The Program itself is common with Walter - 2 Mahler symphonies,
and yet, these discs is from 1942 NYP previously unpublished live recordings. The most
attractive point of these two recordings is not only these are both previously unreleased but
both of these two recordings is capturing Bruno Walter from his 1940s, during which time
Walter was giving passionate performances in NYC like the MET.
In addition, the performance and sonic quality is very positively welcomed. Rarely found first
issued historical recordings often come with sonic problems, but these two recording sound
quality is solid and has strength and clarity. Supposedly, these come from transcribed records
of radio broadcast at the time of the performances. There are such high quality recordings
stored still unreleased in the U.S.!

2014/11/26(水) 23:10:35.36ID:djyrgXLWand among Bruno Walter's recordings this lies in-between the oldest, which is 1939 NBC Symphony
Orchestra version and 1947 Concertghebow Orchestra recording. Sonic quality surpasses both
of these two, and performance itself is in excellently clear balance between movement and
tranquility by New York Philharmonic in not strong individuality but technically well-trained
and the orchestra fulfills Walter's demands. This particular performance comes, surprisingly
for recordings of Bruno Walter in this period of his artistic life, with expressions in depth and
in structural beauty in between passionate but harsh and not wholly controlled 1939 NBC S.O
recording and Willem Mengelberg like erotically emotional 1947 Concertghebow recording.
This particular quality is shared with "Resurrection" symphony given 9 month earlier, which
is a performance from the previous season. The orchestral characteristics written in the "Titan"
symphony is also clearly observed here by sonic quality that captures tranquility. Walter has
his weakness in this period conducting too emotionally to fail to build sheer structural beauty.
However, he successes, in this particular recording of "Resurrection" symphony, in skillfully
setting climaxes and also time to time is building effective huge climaxes by slowing down
tempi little by little.

2014/11/26(水) 23:16:01.70ID:GQ2PYLZustrangeness. This marks Bruno Walter's oldest and meantime the best "Resurrection"
symphony recording in regarding building a symphonic drama of mixture of strength
and softness and of tense and release.
P.S. I don't like this reviewer's skill of writing reviews in Japanese. Very hard to translate or
explain it as it is. My translation version is far better than his Japanese original.
In the liner of "Glenn Gould Silver Jubilee Album" CD released in 1998 was written by a
hand of Japanese musicologist "Titan" and Glenn Gould self-called "expert" called Jun'ichi
Miyazawa. His translation is very strange and has very easy-going errors.
Example:
Margaret Pacsu:
With Sir Nigel Twitt-Thornwaite, she narrated the Italia Prize-contending documentary
"Music at the Chapel Royal from James VI to James I," with Martha Hortavanyi, the psychologically probing TV mini-series "Six Wives of Gregor Samsa" and, in a forthcoming
13-week series "A Fjord in Your Future" co-produced by the Cousteau Institute and the
Southwest Greenland Geographical Society, she will join Karlheinz Klopweisser in a two-man
submarine and a discussion of "Sonar Forms and Echo Ratios from Brattahlid to Herjolfnes."
Miss Pacsu has resided for many years in Toronto where she serves as the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation's token New Jerseyite.

Herjolfnes." Miss Pacsu has resided for many years in Toronto where she serves as the

Shockingly enough, this Jun'ichi Miyazawa is among the most respected by many of
uneducated Japanese music lovers to its scholors. This is one of many samples proving
low standard of the Japanese Intelligentsa quality.
