Poets like Wordsworth and Coleridge, party under the influence of German
Romantics, were converted from rationalism to belief. The new theologians, Catholics
as well as Anglicans, maintained that the chief concern of the Church was
not politics and society but spirituality, and the expression of this spirituality
in services and church buildings. There is a new emphasis on real presence, on the
sacraments, and conseqently a stress on liturgy, on ritual rather than preaching,
and on all the visual and decorative elements that went with the ritual: altars,
vestments, and older forms of church music. Models were found in Middle Ages：
theologians and designers were filled with enthusiasm by picture and written accounts
of medieval church services. Most Gothic Revival work was carried out
by the Established Church, spurred by the Anglican Revival, but the Roman
Catholic Revival occurred first. The Nonconformist churches were less
involved with Romanticism and will be separately.
