Even today,for most people, Gothic and churches go together. But this is
entirely a nineteeth-century way of thinking. Like all Victorian stylistic revivals,
Neo-Gothic was bound up with certain cultural and political attitudes−perhaps more so
than the others, as it was thought of as a more distinctive and controversial style in itself.
Gothic Revivalists always fought harder than the supporters of other styles. Many of them fought
for a religious cause as well. But why should a post-medieval church hark back to the Middle Ages？
The reasons are many and have been touched on in the Intoroduction−antiquarianism, nationalism,
the serch for emotive appeal, the greater opportunity for pictorial decoration. They were largely
a part of Romanticism. The Church had to meet the challenge of scientific method. Belief in the Bible
had been eroded and even theologians had begun to doubt; but a new tendency arose in the early nineteenth
century which by-passed these attacks.
