Members of the orchestra say that their problems with Mr.
Dutoit have grown increasingly intense since a musicians'
strike in 1998 in which players demanded that the orchestra
obey a contract clause limiting rehearsals on travel days.
The union won the point, and in response Mr. Dutoit
curtailed international touring and recording over the last
three years.
Critics of Mr. Dutoit among musicians say it is no
coincidence that one of the two musicians Mr. Dutoit was
trying to fire is Mr. Beliveau, who confronted the
conductor during negotiations to settle the 1998 dispute.
Mr. Beliveau told Mr. Dutoit at the time that he should
limit his international guest conducting appearances so he
could rehearse the orchestra more rigorously in Montreal
before it went on the road, a suggestion the conductor did
not take kindly to.
