The Well-Tempered Clavier is characterized by technical and compositional mastery
which had never been achieved before Bach, nor again since.

This mastery is revealed not only in Bach's perfect control of polyphonical struture,
in absolutely logical leading and interplay of individual voices -
which had been natural for Bach since his years in Kothen -
but even more in treatment and development of the material,
which is so full of fantasy and ideas.

「平均律クラヴィア曲集」は、バッハ以前にもそれ以後にも決して成されない技巧的・構成的熟練をもって特徴づけられている。
ケーテン時代以来、完全に論理的な統率力や個々の声部の相関性がバッハにとって当然のこととなっていたが、
ここでいう熟練は、バッハのそのようなポリフォニー的構成への完璧なる統制力のみのよって表されているのではない。
ここではむしろ、素材の扱いや展開方法によって表されている。
それは幻想と閃きに満ちている。
