Between the two works came the young Japanese violinist Sayaka Shoji
in her Philharmonic debut. She leaned heavily on the lyrical qualities of the
First Violin Concerto, spinning out the lines with impressive poise, refined
technique and an often beautiful tone. This listener missed a few of
the work's darker vistas that were covered with a veil of sweetness,
but Ms. Shoji still showed an emotional expressivity in her playing that
one imagines will deepen with time.
