I will conclude this not very systematic survey of musical and
mathematical notation by noting that while much of it as
contained no surprises (e.g. I trust no one has been astonished
to find constituent structure and dependency structure at least
partially represented in both musical and mathematical notation),
even the unsurprising points are worth saying for the perspective
that they provide on systems of graphic representation, allowing
linguistic writing systems to be seen against the background of
a broader class of notational systems.
