HANS-JURGEN WALTHER
he conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Hans-Jurgen Walther,
was born in 1919, the son of an English professor in the Principal High School
of Schwerin, Germany. With no intent of marking music a career,
as a boy young Hans-Jurgen studied the cello; but this, together with
his academic studies, was interrupted by eight years of enforced military
service. At the culmination of World War Ⅱ he fled to Hamburg where he took up
the study of music in earnest at the age of twenty six. In 1950 he re-established
the Hamburg Chamber Orchestra which had been founded by Hans Schmidt-Isserstett
twenty years earlier. Within a short time he built the orchestra into one
of the foremost recording orchestra of Europe. Beginning with an assignment
for Musical Sound Books,the largest libraly of symphonic music
for children in the U.S.A.,Walther now records for fifteen recording
companies and for two successive years his records have been placed
among the ten best of the year", in the United States of America.
