On playback, with levels and polarities matched, Doug Sax and I knew
which switch position was which, but the orchestral musicians crowding
into the control room did not know. It was very obvious to all that only
the lacquer came close to the direct feed. The three analog machines
were good, each with its own virtues and defects, but in a lower
category than the lacquer.
