HAIEFF, Alexei (b.1914)
American composer of Russian origin.
In 1932, He went to the USA where he studied for three years at the Juilliard School with Jacobi and Goldmark.
He was later a pupil of Boulanger in Cambridge, Mass., and Paris.
In 1942, he received the Lili Boulanger Memorial Award and a medal from the American Academy in Rome. Other awards included...
a Guggenheim Fellowship(1946)
a grant from the National Academy of Arts and Letters(1947)
the American Prix de Rome (1947 & 1948).
He was composer-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome in 1952-53 & 1958-59.
He was visiting professor at the University of Buffalo(1962-64), Andrew Mellon Professor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (1962-63) and visiting professor at the University of Utah (1967-70).
He then divided his time between the USA and Eur. before settling in Rome.
Haieff's music is neo-classical, moving with vitality and clean crispness.
His rhythm owes something to Stravinsky but the general impulse is more flowing and essentially romantic.
