Impression By Bjorn
I have heard this disc. It is a rather impressive achivement. Abbado seems to love this piece. His earlier
CSO recording belonged among his finest Mahler recordings and this one is even better. The last movement
is least succesful. It could have done with a little more fire. The inner movements are glorious. The
scherzos nightmare is very thrilling. Abbado grasps the musics ebb and flow and the overall structure
and tempi is finely judged. The sound is as most DG orchestral recordings, alright but not outstanding.
The BPO is a marvellous orchestra and the strings is particulary impressive. One of the finest modern
Mahler sevenths on disc, no doubts about that. This one make me curious about his Mahler third just
released, but that one is to expensive. Two fullpricediscs for 10 extra minutes, that is ridicolous.
DG should talk to universal in Sweden to ask why they almost never have special prices for issues that
contains more than one cd! In UK you can buy the Mahler third, Hagens Mozartbox, Gardiners new Haydn
masses and so on for specialprice. Not here in Sweden. But thats allright for me, I don´t have to buy
them here in Sweden. You can always buy them on the internet. But I do not get why Universal in Sweden
don´t have the same policy ?Don´t they know that customers compare prices ? Well, that may be as it is,
but this Mahlher seventh is well worth hearing anyway!
